STEEL CORD/CABLE CONSTRUCTIONS

Steel cord This is a 7x7 (7 strands of 7 wires) open type steel cord (or cable) with four different wire diameters.
The advantage of open type steel cords is the high rubberization of the cord gaps - for higher steel cord pull-out strength and better corrosion prevention.

The cable diameter is measured as per DIN 3051.

S Z Cord In a steel cord conveyor belt, Z and S lay steel cords are used alternately to ensure a straight running behaviour of the belt.
The illustration shows a regular lay.
The lay length of the sheath is the le
ngth along the strand in order for a wire to make one complete revolution around the king wire.

So-called "Cable Belts" are not covered by this website. It is a trademark and not a standardized term.
Such belts are sensitive to impact, because there are no steel cords in it but only thin fabric.
Their transverse rigidity is achieved by transverse steel or fiber glass bars. Thus the troughing angle is small, so the belt has to run faster (with all the disadvantages caused by that).
The wear of the many support sheaves is high as are the maintenance costs.
Huge buildings are required for the tensioning and drive station.
If only one cable fails then the entire system is collapsing.
